The hatchery, operated by the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA), is situated on the banks of the picturesque Goulburn River, only a 20-minute drive south of Shepparton.
The open day will provide a great opportunity to explore native fish production, First Nations fishing history and interactive activities.
Taking place over the last weekend of the Term 1 school holidays, the event promises to be both fun-filled and educational, catering to all ages.
Kids can participate in free learn-to-fish clinics with rods and tackle provided by Fishcare Victoria.
There will also be arts and crafts activities and outdoor games to enjoy.
For experienced anglers, the hatchery’s fish-out pond is stocked with Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch.
The hatchery’s native fish production staff will also provide guided tours to give visitors a glimpse into how cod and golden perch are grown.
Additionally, visitors can sample tastings, watch filleting and cooking demonstrations using Murray Cod, and enjoy fish burgers, a sausage sizzle and coffee for lunch.
Fisheries officers and other VFA staff will be available to support anglers with recreational fishing questions and provide valuable insights into how expert staff have bred and grown fish stocked into lakes and rivers.
The Arcadia facility opened in 2021 and has already produced more than 1.9 million native fish as part of Victoria’s record-breaking fish stocking program.
The Victorian Government is investing $10 million to triple the size of the hatchery and make Victoria self-sufficient in regard to fish stocking.
This will ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the state’s beautiful waterways and thriving fish populations.
