Greater Shepparton City Council has instead asked for people to take it to the Cosgrove Landfill where there is an asbestos disposal point.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission published a recall notice earlier this month for Educational Colours colourful children’s sand products sold at Officeworks, Kmart, Target, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids, and Zart Art, that may contain asbestos.
The sand is brightly coloured and designed for children to play with and for educational purposes, and those recalled are labelled as Kadink Sand (1.3kg), Kadink decorative sand 10b six-pack, Educational Colours - Rainbow Sand (1.3kg), Creatistics - Coloured Sand (1kg), Active Sandtub 14 piece sand castle building set, as well as blue, green and pink magic sand.
The products were sold throughout Australia between 2020 and 2025.
The products were recalled because they may contain tremolite asbestos, a naturally occurring asbestos, which was detected in some samples after laboratory testing.
Greater Shepparton City Council infrastructure director Gary Randhawa urged people not to dispose of the kinetic sand in their kerbside bins.
“While this recall may be concerning, we want to reassure the community that safe disposal options are available,” he said.
“We’re asking residents not to place these items in kerbside bins, but instead to bring them, double-wrapped, to Cosgrove Landfill for proper handling.”
However, you must register your booking to dispose of the material on https://shepp.city/AsbestosDisposalBooking
For further information or assistance with making a booking, you can also contact council’s Resource Recovery Team by phoning 5832 9700 or emailing council@shepparton.vic.gov.au
Mr Randhawa said the recall was a timely reminder of the importance of knowing how and where to safely dispose of different types of waste.
“Council provides dedicated services for hazardous waste through Cosgrove Landfill, and we encourage the community to contact us if they’re ever unsure,” he said.
Cosgrove Landfill is located at the corner of Quarry Rd and Cosgrove-Lemnos Rd at Cosgrove.
