World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed on Monday, June 15 and is recognised internationally for communities to come together against abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people.
To mark the day, Greater Shepparton City Council will light up key landmarks purple to help raise awareness of elder abuse and the importance of protecting the rights, dignity and wellbeing of elders.
The sessions are open to anyone, with community members aged 65 and above, family members and carers encouraged to attend. The free sessions will be held across several dates in June:
• Friday, June 5 from 1 to 3pm at Tatura Community House.
• Tuesday, June 9 from 10am to 11.30am at Shepparton Eureka Village.
• Friday, June 12 from 10am to 12.30pm at the GV U3A.
• Tuesday, June 16 from 10am to noon at the North Shepparton Community Centre.
• Friday, June 19 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Murchison Neighbourhood House.
• Monday, June 22 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said the sessions would provide practical information and support to help older residents stay informed and connected.
“Every older person deserves to feel safe, respected and valued in our community,” he said.
“By bringing people together and connecting residents with local support services, we can help older people better understand their rights and where to seek help if needed.”
Elder abuse can take many forms, occurring once or repeatedly and is most commonly performed by someone known to the individual, including adult children, family members or friends.
The sessions will include guest speakers, practical advice on recognising elder abuse, and information on local support services.
Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided at each session.
