The Shepparton Education First Youth Foyer certainly has an entrance area, but it’s generally used by residents, not the public.
During Homelessness Week, however, the wider community was invited and welcomed inside to an open day and social barbecue lunch.
Team leader Matt Jobling said the event on Tuesday, August 5 was a success, with about 60 people through the doors.

“It was a great networking opportunity for agencies and the community, who got to speak to participants in the program and tour the facility,” Mr Jobling said.

Education First Youth Foyers support young people aged between 16 and 24 who are unable to live at home or don’t have a stable place to live.
There are 16 accredited Youth Foyers in Australia, with another 11 being built or developed.
They provide safe, secure accommodation to residents while they study, as well as support and skills they need to become independent adults.
“It was a real highlight that the young people opened their rooms, conducted tours and prepared and cooked the food for our guests,” Mr Jobling said.
“It was great to raise further awareness that homelessness doesn’t discriminate against age, gender or cultural groups.”

Mr Jobling thanked everyone who came along, shared stories and asked questions on the day.
