Guests in attendance included Bishop Clarence E. Bester, Uncle Bobby Nicholls, City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali and state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe.
The ceremony was held in the new middle school building and began with a Welcome to Country from Uncle Bobby, which was followed by prayer and a homily led by Bishop Bester.
Anglischools board chair Lynne Thomson unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening.
“This school has been accepted and welcomed into this community,” she said.
Reverend Peter Laurence spoke of the history of the school and brought students on stage as ‘little saints’ to represent how the school had grown, much to the amusement of the children in attendance.
After the opening ceremony, guests were invited outside for the ‘turning of the sod’ to celebrate the commencement of work on the next stage of the school’s development, an extension to its STEAM building, which will support study in the arts and sciences.
After the land was blessed by Bishop Bester, Reverend Laurence thanked Keyystone Building Group.
“No pressure on you, but God is watching,” he said, with a smile.
Foundation principal Jim Laussen spoke about the value of the construction project.
“Building in schools is always exciting,” he said.
“It’s wonderful to provide for these kids.”
Uncle Bobby Nicholls attended to give the Welcome to Country and encourage students to stand up against racism.
