More than 50 bookworms got to escape inside their ‘new’ — or recycled — books after visiting the Wilmot Rd Community Hub’s inaugural book fair ahead of the long weekend.
Hub leader Sarah Pearson said the event was a huge success, with more than 500 books carried out the door.
But the $1 for three novels or five picture books pricetag didn’t just benefit shoppers, as the fair doubled as a fundraiser, with $368.60 raised through book sales and donations for the Caroline Chisholm Society Goulburn Valley (GV Pregancy and Family Support Service).
“I will be purchasing much-needed supplies requested by the Caroline Chisholm Society,” Ms Pearson said.
“I will purchase nappies, wipes, baby socks and more next week to deliver to the lovely ladies there.”
Ms Pearson said even with so many books sold on the day, there was a full trailer load left after the fair.
“It is a great testament to the community and how willing they are to donate to events like this,” she said.
“A very big thanks to everyone for the amazing donations I received.”
The remaining stock was donated to FamilyCare’s Book Inn the morning after the fair, just in time for its school holiday specials.
Ms Pearson wanted to thank volunteers Anthony Pearson, Sharleen Bachelor and Meg Pethybridge for helping set up and pack down, and other volunteers for arranging delivery of the leftovers to the Book Inn.
“Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to pull this week off,” she said.
Ms Pearson is hoping to be able to make the book fair an annual event on the hub’s calendar.
