Hidden in History is a weekly column that unearths the quirky, curious and sometimes eyebrow-raising tales from Shepparton’s past. Provided by the Shepparton Heritage Centre, these articles are rooted in fact — but told with a wink and a sense of humour.

The brothers Carlos — John, Jeff, Jim, Adrian and Max — all learnt their craft at the Youth Club’s gym that had been set up in the old boat shed at Victoria Lake just after World War II.
The Carlos boys claimed an Australian record in 1953, when Jim, Max and Adrian each won Victorian Junior titles on the same night.
Max progressed through the ranks and fought in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, losing his fight narrowly on points.
He turned professional in 1957, and in just his fourth professional fight, outpointed George Bracken in a non-title bout — the first of their three epic encounters.
