However, this year’s Education Week celebrations have the school buzzing with excitement, with plenty planned throughout the week.
Acting principal Angela Grumley said it was an important message to share and one that sends an ongoing, powerful reminder to students about the value of diversity.
“Education Week is a chance to celebrate all the great things we do at Guthrie Street,” she said.
“Each year we have a different focus. This year, we’ll be highlighting literacy and numeracy, sharing stories from different cultures and diverse backgrounds.”
Throughout the week, classroom teachers will also open their doors to families for a special event on Wednesday, May 21, from 9am to 10am.
“We’re calling it a ‘Grandparents Open Morning,’ but it’s open to all family members and other important people in the students’ lives,” Mrs Grumley said.
“Our school community is very supportive of this annual event. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to see how we foster inclusivity, how we use technology, and how education continues to evolve to meet the needs of 21st-century learners.”
A team of teachers has worked collaboratively to plan a week full of educational experiences for the school's 400-plus students.
“Part of this planning includes student voice and advocacy,” Mrs Grumley said.
“Ownership of their education is highly valued at Guthrie Street. Students will be reading and responding to a variety of texts that explore different cultures from around the world.”
Students will also have the opportunity to showcase cultural dances and songs to the wider school community.
Mrs Grumley said the week was shaping up to be a fantastic experience that everyone was looking forward to.
“Staff and students are really excited,” she said.
“Every year, Education Week is a wonderful celebration, and this year will be no different.
“It’s lovely to open the school up for events like this, and we encourage all families to take part in our school assemblies too.”
