Report into Greater Shepparton Secondary College uncovers racism, lack of diversity

A cultural advisory committee has been formed to guide Greater Shepparton Secondary Collegesâ€™ response to findings of systemic racism and a lack of diversity at the fledgling school.

The report, prepared by cross-cultural consultant Georgia Birch over six months had been kept under wraps since November.

Leaked to the ABC, it makes 48 recommendations and criticises the lack of diversity and cultural awareness among teaching staff.

Poor educational outcomes and disengagement of Indigenous students is also detailed in the report.

Underachievement on student engagement and learning is one of the key reasons for developing the Shepparton Education Plan and Greater Shepparton Secondary College.

Community and education leaders were briefed on the report in Shepparton last Friday and supported the establishment of a cultural advisory steering committee to determine what actions were needed.

Deputy secretary of schools and regional services David Howes said racism was not acceptable in any setting.

Mr Howes will address the report today.

The briefing on cultural issues came after a week where disputes between student groups led to violence, injuries and lockdowns.
