But Salvation Army Lieutenant Tarsha Laundon assured support services would continue.
Lt Laundon said caring for communities has always been at the forefront of the Salvation Army’s ethos, which makes the decision to stop taking donations at the Family Store a hard one.
‘‘An essential component in our resources has been the donations we have received from communities. They assist us to keep caring and have always been appreciated.
‘‘In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, part of our responsibility toward safe practice means we have had to close our family store. It is therefore essential that people stop donating goods to our op shops immediately.
‘‘We do not have the capability to adequately handle goods, including quarantining goods for three days. Any goods donated will need to be dumped and that would be upsetting for all concerned.
‘‘We apologise if this inconveniences anyone, but we need to be part of the solution toward limiting the spread of the virus.’’
Those requiring support can still call 1300 371 288 for access to food and financial assistance.
‘‘If you need help, please give us a call. We are always happy to have a chat and are here to help you get through these uncertain times,’’Lt Laundon said.
