The Australian Deer Association warmly welcomes the Victorian government’s announcement of the new Outdoor Recreation Victoria body. This marks a truly significant moment for recreational hunting, opening the door to the strong, active promotion our community has long advocated for.
Victoria now strengthens its position as a global leader in recreational hunting and fishing, supported by public land access that remains unmatched anywhere else. Importantly, this transition comes with no job losses, ensuring that the valuable experience within the Game Management Authority and the Victorian Fisheries Authority is preserved. Their knowledge will form a vital foundation for the success of Outdoor Recreation Victoria.
The new authority will build on the public land access we strongly value and advocate for, such as the opening up of the Snowy River and Errinundra National Parks. A dedicated public land access panel will explore further opportunities for recreational hunting and fishing, as well as four-wheel driving and dispersed camping, helping more Victorians enjoy the state’s great outdoors.
Recreational hunting will have a strong and secure place within the new structure. A hunting advisory committee composed of industry representatives will ensure that hunters' voices remain central to decisions shaping the future of the activity.
Outdoor Recreation Victoria will also report to the Minister for Outdoor Recreation. A natural alignment which also is a sign of the growing importance and development of this portfolio since its creation in December 2022.
