Athlete-monitoring devices from ASX-listed Catapult are also being used in the NRL and AFL, the NBA, the English Premier League and Nascar - in all, more than 3400 elite teams in over 100 countries.
"We've been really on a tear, I think, particularly with the elite side of sports," Catapult's Boston-based chief executive Will Lopes says.
"This past year, we were really excited to say that we have now every NFL team as a client; about 80 per cent of Premier League are using at least one type of solution from us, the bulk of the Bundesliga (German soccer) as well."
In North America, about 90 per cent of the schools in the most competitive college football division use Catapult technology, as do elite college basketball teams like Duke.
Catapult's $45 million acquisition last year of London-based SBG Sports Software means their tech is also used by 90 per cent of Formula One teams as well as FIA, the governing body of world motor sports.
"We really are starting to become very prolific with all the major sporting codes, and all the major teams," Mr Lopes tells AAP.
Today with more than 500 staff in 28 locations around the globe, Catapult had its basis in a partnership between the Australian Institute of Sport and the Cooperative Research Centres to help Aussie athletes prepare for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
"Very quickly the founders realised that oh my god, they were sitting around something that could be very meaningful to teams around the world," Mr Lopes says.
The company was founded in Melbourne in 2006 and listed on the ASX in 2014.
The main product involves a device worn by athletes, typically under a compression jersey, that transmits more than 100 different data points per second to a receiver on the sidelines.
"We're looking at not only position on the field but acceleration between points, change of gait - how things are moving on an axis - and force, essentially," Mr Lopes says.
That data is then analysed by Catapult software, which has developed different algorithms not just for each sport but also for individual positions within each sport.
As an example, Mr Lopes describes how Catapult's technology could detect changes in the gait of, say, an American football wide receiver who needs to sprint downfield to catch a pass.
"Athletes being athletes, you may ask them 'are you feeling okay?' and I may say I'm feeling fine. But the data will say, 'hey, something's up'.
"And so using that will give them a real sense of maybe something's going on, maybe I'm seeing the beginning of an injury," Mr Lopes explains.
"And if you start to do that, very finely tuned by position and by sport, it starts to become a really great breakthrough in terms of how to manage those performances."
Catapult has mostly been focused on team sports but is looking to expand more into individual Olympic sports. The company has a number of NBA teams as customers already but still sees basketball as a growth area.
The cost for using Catapult's software-as-a-service offering varies, with teams spending anywhere from $50,000 to half a million dollars a year on the offering, Mr Lopes says.
"Quite honestly, while it sounds impressive, given how important it's become to a lot of teams, I actually think the reality is that over time, they're going to spend even more with us, just to ensure they have more data, more analytics.
"Teams are definitely looking for more and more data, and more technology to help them be more efficient obviously, you still need to be a great coach to win. You still need to be great players to win.
"But what I would say is, the proliferation of data has become incredibly important for our clients to make decisions in terms of recruitment and training sessions, game-day planning and training."
