Now in its tenth year in Greater Shepparton, the Championships will be held at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve over the King’s Birthday long weekend, attracting more than 550 players.
In addition, an additional 150 umpires, coaches, family members and supporters are expected to make the trip to the Goulburn Valley region for the garland occasion.
To facilitate the staging of matches, there will be 11 softball diamonds set up at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.
Mayor of Greater Shepparton, Shane Sali, expressed his belief that hosting this event continues to reinforce the region’s reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events.
“This is Greater Shepparton’s tenth time hosting the Championships, with the event continuing to expand and attract more competitors and spectators each year,” he said, as he outlined the potential of the spectacle.
“Council is proud to continue to sponsor and support these prestigious Championships, which bring both high-quality competition and action to our region.
Local groups are expected to benefit from the region having hosting duties for the event, including the Mooroopna Cricket Club who run the BBQ and canteen, along with local food truck vendors.
“We know events like this also generate significant economic activity for our region, and we encourage visitors to support our local businesses while they are here,” Sali said.
Softball Victoria Executive Officer, Jo Schutt has confirmed that preparations are well underway for what is shaping up to be another successful tournament in Greater Shepparton.
“We have 42 teams which is maintaining the high numbers from last year, showing the events ongoing popularity,’’ she said.
“We will have our Over 35 Men & Women's state team athletes competing, in preparation for Nationals which will begin next month.”
Ms Schutt said a feature of the weekend includes live performances on Saturday night at the "Band Night" at the Peppermill Inn, with proceeds from the night going towards junior development programs.
