Residents from Benalla, Shepparton and Tatura took to Facebook on the afternoon of Friday, March 20 to share images of a strange formation of clouds.

According to Weatherzone, the funnel shaped clouds were caused by ‘virga’, a phenomenon where precipitation evaporates before it can reach the ground, often occurring away from the coast in arid environments.
These clouds can appear on radar images even if the people beneath them do not experience rain.
The Bureau of Meteorology advises against flying aircraft through virga, as the phenomenon is often accompanied by strong downdrafts.
