Let’s talk about the future of our beloved electorate of Farrer and try to process change after we elect a candidate in the upcoming by-election for our federal seat.
I am writing about the neglect of Farrer by the major parties, focusing today on the pillaging of our communities’ resources.
In the past century the Federal Government cut up large amounts of station country and built the Snowy to turn the region into the food bowl of Australia.
We developed horticulture, dairying, livestock, rice, cotton along with canola and winter cereals and it worked very well until the government wanted the water.
How do we now fix this mess?
The water sharing plan between NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the environment needs to be reset so it is equitable.
Should the lower Murray go back to being estuarine, as it was for millions of years?
That may assist the people of Farrer to receive a decent water allocation that will allow them to continue farming.
There needs to be a Royal Commission into the Murray Darling Basin Authority and the whole water sharing mess (plan).
The government keeps pillaging our water, but it hasn’t fixed any of the environmental problems and more water to South Australia is not the answer.
Getting more water to South Australia will create huge problems, with flooding and more environmental issues for our region.
We in Farrer have certainly been neglected and pillaged by the successive governments that most of us trusted and voted for.
