Sam Nash’s charges fired on all cylinders against Pine Lodge at Lemnos, cracking a season-high total and snaring late wickets to sit in a position of power heading into day two.
Yet it wasn’t so much what they did, but how they did it.
“It was a great day - we really set out to go out there and prove a point and send a message,” Nash said.
“Going out there and posting a total like that was really good, and everyone that batted showed some real intent and that was our plan for the whole day.
“The partnership that Seb (Menzhausen) and Shobhit (Sabharwal) was really good to watch - (it was) some of the best hitting I’ve seen in a long time.”
SYCU clubbed a whopping 308 before declaring at six wickets down, set up by some elite batting from Seb Menzhausen and Shobhit Sabharwal, who produced a whopping 157-run partnership.
Menzhausen arrived at the crease after opener Oliver Swain was dismissed for five, and though he was well supported by Tyler Green (33) and Keegan Armstrong (28), the real show started when Sabharwal arrived at the crease.
Here, the duo punched gloves and started punching gaps.
For 26 overs, the pair were infallible as Menzhausen played his trademark anchor role while Sabharwal stood and delivered off the front foot, smashing five to the ropes and nine over it on the way to an incredulous ton.
It marked SYCU’s first A-grade century of the season, and though Sabharwal’s innings was bought to an end an over later, his 102 off 79 was pure box office batting.
“He’s had a few innings this year here he’s had a couple of 40s and they’ve been good to watch, so it was really cool to see him carry on with it,” Nash said.
“He’s had those really explosive innings where he comes in and whacks a quick 20 to 30 off not many balls, so to see him carry on and turn it into a big total - our first A-grade hundred for the year - was pretty cool.”
Menzhausen carried the torch with Nash alongside him, looking certain to notch a century during an innings that deserved a double-bat raise.
However, that dream was dashed when he was bowled on 91 by Karan Saini - an unlucky way for the import to sign off on his time down under with the stick.
“It was really shattering that he didn’t make a 100 - it would’ve been really cool for him as this will be his last game in Australia,” Nash said.
Without Menzhausen for company, Nash slashed 35 off 21 rocks - 30 of which arrived from boundaries - before deciding to have a bowl.
And what a decision that proved to be.
Nash snared Hayden Cann for 12 while Joe Hammond cleaned up Travis Knight and Xavier Waters for single digits, leaving the Lodgers languishing on 3-46 with Gurinder Singh (16) and Dylan Hardy (13) at the crease.
“Once we reached 300 we said, yep, 17 overs would be a bit of fun for us to have a bowl and see if we could snag a few wickets and we did which was really good to see,” Nash said.
“The bowling group didn’t get out there to have a bat so they were itching to have a bowl and see what they could do.
“We had a lot of momentum on our side making all of those runs, so to go off and snag a few wickets, it’s a pretty cool feeling as a team going into next week.”
