She's spent her life getting her hands dirty as one of Australia's most accomplished soil scientists but Dr Orgill hasn't yet had the pleasure of unearthing her version of a unicorn.
The elusive native worms live in clay soils in Victoria and are so big they could be mistaken for a snake.
"I dream about the day I find one," Dr Orgill told AAP.
"They can grow up to three-metres long and apparently you can hear them underground.
"My mum and dad used to have a farm in South Gippsland. I feel like I need to go back to my homeland on the giant Gippsland earthworm pilgrimage," she joked.
Dr Orgill's enthusiasm for the vast ecosystem beneath our feet is palpable.
While there might be slightly more glamorous areas of science, she specialised in soil because of its influence on all aspects of life.
There are, she points out, trillions of vital organisms living in a single teaspoon of soil.Â
"Everything starts with healthy soils," she said.
"Healthy landscapes, waterways, the beautiful vegetation that we see, the food we eat, the fibre we grow and wear."
Part of Dr Orgill's work as chief scientist at Impact Ag, a firm that works to tap into agriculture's potential as a climate tool, is helping farmers build up carbon in their soils.
She is a sort of dirt detective, hunting for clues about what might be happening underground by looking at trees, water and wildlife.
"It's the recognition of patterns in the landscape," she said.
"A biodiverse pasture, or animals which have access to lots of different plants to graze ... (there's) a whole soil community below ground which is driving and supporting that."
Dr Orgill, who won a major Landcare Australia award in 2025, will host an investigation of an interactive soil pit at the Wilmot Field Day in northern NSW in early March.
She is among several female leaders in regenerative agriculture to feature at the field day, alongside a Queensland beef producer, a meat scientist and business experts.
Soil is interesting not only in the world of farming, Dr Orgill said.
She has noticed a growing fascination among everyone from bureaucrats to school kids, as people seek greater connection with the origins of their food.
Australian scientists are also exploring the connection between soil microbes and humans' gut-brain axis, including their influence on "feel good" chemicals like dopamine.
"Everyone loves getting their hands dirty, feeling soil, smelling soil, looking at all the different colours," Dr Orgill said.
"Knowing that it's making people happy and getting that dopamine hit - that is cool."
Billed as Australia's premier regenerative agriculture event, Wilmot Field Day will be held on March 4 and 5 at Hernani, between Armidale and Coffs Harbour.
