It’s been stolen.
Landcare volunteer Trish Moss was watering trees in the park when she noticed the historic ‘Tallygaroopna Station Park’ sign missing on Friday, January 30.
Tallygaroopna local and Landcare member Rob Slee was in disbelief, saying the sign was “about 20-foot high” and must have required “a decent-sized trailer” to remove it from the site.
Tallygaroopna’s Victoria Hotel burnt down in 2012. The Carlton Draught sign can be seen to the right of the old pub in this image.
“We are very disappointed and upset,” Ms Slee said.
“It’s been unbolted and taken through the night under the cover of darkness.
“I just couldn’t believe someone would do it; I thought it would have needed a crane.”
The sign’s post, a tall lollipop-shaped steel structure, originally displayed a Carlton Draught sign at the Victoria Hotel in Victoria Rd, which burnt down on April 30, 2012.
The tall sign post, as pictured in this image taken in April 2012, when the Tallygaroopna pub was on fire, once held a Carlton Draught sign.
It was salvaged by Landcare and the Tallygaroopna community and repurposed to hold a new sign featuring a railway crossing symbol and the words, ‘Tallygaroopna Station Park’, before being installed at the park on the Goulburn Valley Hwy in the town.
“We were trying to keep a bit of history and now it’s been torn down,” Ms Slee said.
“This was quite a landmark this sign, it goes back to the pub days.”
The community is appealing for any information about the sign, or for it to be returned.
