Members of the Kaarimba Rural Fire Brigade, along with family and friends, some travelling from Melbourne for the occasion, gathered at the Kaarimba Public Hall to honour his outstanding contributions.
Kaarimba Rural Fire Brigade captain Col Grinter described the afternoon as beautiful.
“It was a lovely day, and there was much socialising following the ceremony,” Col said.
Just six years after joining the CFA, Howard became an officer in 1961, rising from 4th lieutenant to captain in 1984, a role he held for 20 years. He later served two terms as brigade secretary.
“Howard retired to Numurkah but continued on the duty roster, taking his turn on the truck for its weekly test run until 2013,” Col said.
“He continues to support the brigade, attending all their functions and rarely missing a meeting.”
Over the years, Howard attended countless fires and incidents, represented the brigade at all levels of meetings, and served as deputy group officer for a period.
“For many years, the fire truck was stationed on Howard’s farm, where he took pride in keeping it in excellent order,” Col said.
“He has been an extremely dedicated volunteer.”
Brigade administrative support officer John Parnell represented the CFA and presented Howard with his 70-year medal.
Several other members were also recognised for long service: Brad Sanders (15 years), Laurence Hicks and Darryl Hill (30 years), Tony Rando (35 years), Craig Brown (40 years), and Anthony Sofra and Jim Brown (45 years).
