In the October 14 edition of the Deniliquin Pastoral Times I was quoted as doing a Welcome to Country at the Anthony Breslin Art Prize, when in fact I presented an Acknowledgement of Country.
A Welcome to Country can only be given by a local Traditional Owner, whereas an Acknowledgement of Country can be made by anyone who wishes to make such a statement.
Generally, a welcome is given as an invitation to do some form of business together and requires a response about what this business might be.
An Acknowledgement of Country is different.
This is a statement of respect and comes with an offer, and an expectation, that there is consideration of the impact any business has on Aboriginal people and their Country.
Should anyone need any further clarification of this difference, please get in contact with us at Yarkuwa.
Yours etc.
