Get Started Disability Support Australia has announced the launch of its peer-led Disability Support Workshop Series, in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council.
The free, six-session program aims to connect and empower people with disabilities, carers, families and their allies across the region — offering practical guidance, emotional support and local know-how to help participants confidently navigate life with a disability.
“Learning how to live with a disability is incredibly daunting, and we believe the best support comes from those who’ve lived it,” Said Mandy, the chief executive and founder of Get Started Disability Support
“This series brings vital information, peer connection and empowerment to local communities like Shepparton.”
Each session is facilitated by Mandy herself — a passionate advocate and community leader who has dedicated her life to helping others adjust to life-changing circumstances.
The workshops cover everything from understanding funding options and sharing local knowledge, from accessible cafés and events to trusted support providers, plus fostering meaningful community connections along the way.
Importantly, participants do not need to be eligible for the NDIS to take part.
The sessions are co-designed by people with disability and chronic health conditions, ensuring an inclusive and understanding environment where participants can share stories, learn from one another and find strength in connection.
“Living regionally presents different challenges,” Mandy said.
“Finding accessible taxis, navigating the NDIS, or even discovering which cafés are wheelchair-friendly — these are real issues people face every day. Our workshops are about giving people those local insights and connections that can make life easier.”
Mandy hopes the workshops will equip individuals with practical knowledge and strengthen the sense of belonging within Shepparton’s disability community.
“By bringing people together, our workshops create community — so that people can support each other,” she said.
“The journey of learning to live with a disability should never be walked alone.”
Shepparton’s first session will take place at the Shepparton Uniting Church, 134-140 Fryers St, on Friday, October 17 from 11am to 1pm at no cost to those in attendance.
