Now, its might is being tested again.
Last year, a push for funding after it was announced by the Caroline Chisholm Society that the service would close at the end of 2024, raised $30,000 to sustain its material aid branch for another 10 months or so.
The service, which provides items such as free clothing, nappies and other essentials for babies and children, and prams, cots and car seats depending on availability, has been dubbed by families it has helped a “lifeline for pregnant women and vulnerable families in Shepparton”.
The organisation had provided further wraparound services, with two practitioners employed to deliver pregnancy and parenting support, for three years, which were not reinstated in February alongside the material aid service.
With no regular ongoing government support, there is a regular ongoing battle to be fought.
“With demand tripling in the past year, it’s clear that our service is needed more than ever,” Caroline Chisholm Society, Pregnancy and Family Support Service chief executive Lolou Kini said.
While the service is not yet facing as dire straits as it was last year, having managed to secure some more funding through philanthropic giving, it doesn’t have any long-term funding.
It is seeking further public support before the situation worsens to the point of facing closure again.
“We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support and generous donations that continue to make this vital work possible,” Ms Kini said.
“If you’re in a position to help, we welcome donations to ensure we can continue meeting the growing needs of families in the community.”
