Following an investigation by the league, Shepparton has been disqualified from the finals series for a breach of rules of the competition.
The Reds defeated Eaglehawk 8-7 on penalties in last weekend’s quarter-final, but now the Greater Bendigo-based outfit will progress through to a preliminary final clash against Shepparton South.
While the exact breach has not been revealed due to the process potentially still ongoing - the club still has a small window to appeal the decision - BASL president Aaron Shooter confirmed the investigation’s result and consequence for Shepparton.
“We investigated a breach of the rules of the competition and found there had been one, so the result was overturned,” Shooter said.
“We’ve spoken to the leadership of that club and they have communicated with the people managing the team on the day.
“We weren’t able to get a clear answer on whether it was an intention or a mistake, but we were able to get evidence to suggest a breach had occurred.”
Shepparton club president Stefo Radevski acknowledged the league’s investigation and decision to disqualify the Reds, however chose not to comment further on whether the club would make an appeal.
Preliminary finals take place on Sunday at Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve for the Shepparton United and Tatura clash, and at Truscott Reserve between Shepparton South and, at this stage, FC Eaglehawk.
