Emergency services were called to Taigum in Brisbane's north about 12.30am on Saturday where they found a 48-year-old woman, in an unresponsive state.
Paramedics tried reviving her but she was subsequently declared dead at the scene.
Following initial investigations, police located a 52-year-old man in the nearby suburb of McDowall.
He was assisting detectives with their inquiries.
Two crime scenes were established, with police appealing for anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious at either the Taigum or McDowell addresses, or may have relevant CCTV footage, to come forward.
Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man has appeared in a Sydney court following the murder of a 55-year-old man at Goulburn in the NSW southern tablelands.
Police say officers discovered the victim's body at a home in Cathcart Street on Friday morning after concerns were raised about his welfare.
The man suffered what were described as significant facial injuries.
As investigators conducted inquiries, outgoing NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb, Police Minister Yasmin Catley and Premier Chris Minns were streets away, attending a major graduation ceremony at the Goulburn Police Academy.
The accused man was arrested in Goulburn and charged with murder on Friday night.
He appeared briefly in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
