Shepparton’s historic move towards self-governance

From 1871 to 1879 Shepparton was part of the vast Shire of Echuca, before seceding in May 1879 to establish its own local government.

From 1871 to 1879 Shepparton and district was part of the vast Shire of Echuca, but in May 1879 Shepparton grew bolder and seceded from what had previously been the eastern riding of the Shire of Echuca on the Murray River to the north, then the nucleus of local government in northern Victoria.
