A man has been charged after being found in a vehicle that was stolen during an alleged carjacking in Shepparton last week.

On Friday, June 27, a Nathalia man and a woman were driving north along Wyndham St in a blue Mazda 3 when they swerved to avoid being sideswiped by a vehicle that had crossed into their lane.

Their vehicle mounted the median strip and collided with a power pole at about 8pm.

Police said when the pair was stopped and trying to repair the Mazda near the Balaclava Rd intersection, they were allegedly approached by a male and a female, who were armed with a knife and demanded the car’s keys before fleeing the scene in the Mazda.

Shepparton police found the stolen vehicle in Mooroopna on Monday morning with a 32-year-old Mooroopna man inside.

The man was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and bailed to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court in December.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV or dashcam footage, or anyone with information, is urged to contact Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit on 5820 5777 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au
