The Redlegs were rampant during the 2024-25 Goulburn Valley Playing Area midweek pennant season, clinching the division one premiership over Tatura-Hill Top by 44 shots in March.
Now, they’ve gone a step further.
Tallygaroopna took out the Bowls Victoria State Midweek Pennant Championships at Moama Bowling Club, beating Kyneton 3-48 to 0-46 in the grand final on April 29.
On the road to the decider, the Redlegs ousted Mt Eliza, City Warrnambool, Lakes Entrance and Warracknabeal during pool play before losing to Deer Park in the final group stage round.
Scraping through to the grand final on percentage and score differential, Tallygaroopna made the most of its chance by breaking out to a 13-shot lead midway through the match.
Kyneton swung the pendulum back to gain the ascendancy, setting up a see-sawing second half where the Redlegs heaved over the line during the final ends of the game.
It added another feather in the cap of Tallygaroopna, with its almost perfect 2024-25 season only slightly marred by a loss to Shepparton Golf in the GVPA division one weekend pennant grand final.
The Golfers couldn’t recreate that success during the Bowls Victoria State Weekend Pennant Championships, finishing with a 2-3 ledger to miss out on finals.
Brad Orr’s charges defeated Birchip and Wodonga, but fell to Chalambar Golf, Traraglon and Yarraville Footscray, rounding out fourth in their pool.
However, Moama affirmed its reputation as a country juggernaut, going 5-0 on the way to meeting Traralgon in the grand final on April 27.
From there, the Steamers cleaned up their opposition and produced a 3-46 to 0-24 result to win the title and mark a memorable day for Moama.
Kyabram product Olivia Cartwright was among the victorious players in green and, though it was undoubtedly a special triumph on home greens, the bowls prodigy is about to take it up a notch.
Bowls Australia recently confirmed its squads for the Gold Coast-hosted 2025 National Development Series in July, providing an opportunity for the country’s best talents to be blooded for future Jackaroos duties.
Cartwright will make her debut in the series, joining the likes of fellow Moama teammate Cameron Keenan and Benalla export Tyson Cromie in the mix.
Bowls Australia’s performance director and national coach Gary Willis said the National Development Series continued to be a cornerstone in the development of Australia’s international bowls program.
“The series is a fantastic opportunity for our emerging players to challenge themselves against their peers and develop the skills required to succeed at the elite level,” Willis said.
“We’re excited to see the squads compete and showcase the next generation of talent in Australian bowls.
“I would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support from the Australian Institute of Sport, as part of our Pathways Performance Program, and Commonwealth Games Australia in the delivery of this event.”
