The association is halfway through its first season of a mixed section for male and female participants, with the competition allowing boys to now play in a 15-and-under age bracket.
Shepparton Netball Association hopes the introduction of this league helps promote an inclusive environment and gender equality within the league.
An increase in male participation in netball across the region has inspired Shepparton Netball Association president Marilyn Wall to provide more opportunities for young netballers to participate in mixed competitions.
“Our decision to create a mixed section reflects SNA’s commitment to inclusivity while respecting the competition, so that a positive experience is provided for all players,“ Wall said.
“On May 25, we had two 15-and-under teams on court playing each other that had male team members playing in opposing teams.
“This is a significant step forward in ensuring that our netball competitions are accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of gender.”
As the sport of male netball continues to grow gradually in metropolitan areas, this initiative by Shepparton Netball Association will help male junior netballers play the sport they love for longer into their teenage years.
Association vice-president Janet Davies encouraged any young male netballers in the region to consider signing up for the mixed competition.
“It’s like any other sport, like everything in life; you don’t know until you try it,” Davies said.
“Come with an open mind and just give it a go.
“We are midway through the season, but there is nothing stopping anybody from joining one of the six teams in that section.”
