The Wombats forward booted the goal of Saturday’s senior grand final in a 65-point rout of Nagambie, summoning a pure piece of witchcraft from the pocket to send shivers through the blue and gold army perched in the stands of the Midland Hwy end at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.
When quizzed on whether his third quarter effort was his best ever, Serra chuckled with humility.
“It’d be up there,” he said.
‘I didn’t really know what was going through my head. I thought it was touched on the line, but I’m happy it went through.“
Serra sure is a happy camper since electing Lancaster as his new home.
After spending the bulk of his junior career at Tatura, the club which handed him his senior debut, Serra played last season for a mid-table Numurkah side.
The performances were there, sure, but he was definitely lacking a sniff of September action.
And so, the proposition became more and more enticing for a young goal sneak to link up with his friends in a highly competitive Wombats side.
“Heap of mates I grew up with and went to school with (were at Lancaster), and Tommy Davies was a big bloke to sort of get me on board,” he said.
“He said to go back, have fun with your mates and get back to having fun playing footy. I really enjoyed this year.”
Despite kicking the best goal of the match, Serra may have had the worst miss across 120 minutes as his shot after the siren from 15m sprayed left of the target.
But good luck wiping the smile off Serra’s face.
He had a goal, a premiership and a swag of mates to celebrate with, and that was enough to keep that grin wide hours after the game had ended.
“As soon as that siren went, I was just happy,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it, best bloody game. It was great to win with the boys and we’re just going to celebrate hard.
“It’s my first senior premiership, my third ever senior final as well, so I’m pretty happy with it.”
