Footy heroes help hospital

Legend of the game: John Coleman takes a “screamer” for Essendon during his 134-game career that was cut short by a knee injury. Before arriving at Windy Hill he kicked 296 goals in 37 games for his home team Hastings, including 23 in one game against Sorrento in August 1948. He and his brother played at Rochester Recreation Reserve in the hospital charity game between Hastings and Rochester.

John Coleman (captain, 537 goals in 98 VFL games for Essendon; five time VFL leading goalkicker, AFL Team of the Century full forward).

Bill Hutchison (Essendon VFL captain, 1952-53 Brownlow Medallist, seven time Essendon best and fairest, 290 games and 496 goals)

The pair kicked nine of Hastings’ 12 goals for the match. Indigenous star Norm McDonald was also in the Hastings line-up, along with John Coleman’s brother, Alby.

Rochester

Ted Whitten (Mr Football, 321 games for Footscray, five times best and fairest, AFL Team of the Century captain, 1954 premiership player

Harry Hickey (After 174 games for Footscray was captain-coach of Rochester in the Bendigo Football League for four years and won the 1949 - Bendigo Football League - RSL best and fairest award)

Jack Kirchoffer, Allen Rogers, Roy Mundie, Jim Clark, Dick and Doodie McGillivray played with the Rochester team and all had connections to the region.
