Parents play important role

“For Education Week, we’re inviting our parents and grandparents in for a morning and they'll go into the classrooms and participate in a mixture of literacy and numeracy activities with the kids,” Mr Simpson said.

“There will be a variety of open ended activities the kids can choose from and then teach their parents or grandparents how to complete the activities. Each year level will choose a different area to focus on.

“We want to make a big emphasis on getting our parent community back into the school and into classrooms to celebrate the learning of our students. Kids love showing their parents what they can do.”

Grahamvale Primary School already has strong parent involvement outside of the classroom with an active parents’ club and sports club which further encourages parents to get involved in fundraising efforts for the school and provides further sporting opportunities for our students.

Helping the students become active learners is highly encouraged at the school through the implementation of phonics based learning in literacy.

“We’re focused on preventing learning gaps for our students,” Mr Simpson said.

“We want all students to be successful learners and we’re seeing a difference in our achievement data.

“Our teachers are very passionate and driven by the way we teach literacy here at Grahamvale.

“Foundation students take part in investigation sessions each week where students have an opportunity to get creative with some play based learning.”

The Education Week parents and grandparents activity morning will run from 9am to 10am on Tuesday, May 16 at Grahamvale Primary School.
