Shepparton is ranked second for accessing the most solar rebates in regional Victoria, since the state government’s Solar Homes Program began in 2018.
It sits behind only Mildura and is followed by Wodonga, Wangaratta and Wallan in leading the numbers in country areas.
More than 200,000 Victorians have installed solar technologies through the program, which allows eligible homeowners and rental providers to apply for rebates of $1400 to install solar panels.
It also offers the option of an interest-free $1400 loan and a further $1000 rebate for installing solar hot water.
On average, households save $1073 a year in electricity costs.
Solar Homes Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the program was driving down the cost of living for households and reducing emissions.
“Solar Homes customers are well positioned to absorb energy bill rises in energy costs, by time-setting appliances to run during the day when solar systems are operating at their peak,” she said.
Residents who have not previously claimed a solar homes rebate can receive assistance to install a solar battery.
The Solar for Business Program is also available, with up to $8500 off the upfront cost of a solar system installation for eligible Victorian businesses.
