Memorial unveiled at Mivo Park

A small ceremony was held on Saturday, July 1 at Cobram’s Mivo Park for the unveiling of the town’s latest war memorial.

The gathering coincided with the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Mivo River, which took place in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, during World War II.

Cobram Barooga RSL sub-branch president Barry Clarke said the memorial recognised the conflicts Australia had been involved in since Federation.

The ceremony was attended by students from Cobram Anglican Grammar School, state Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy and members of the Army School of Health, who provided the catafalque party.

Moira Shire Council was represented by administrator John Tanner, and the Murray Border Flying Club provided a fly-over.

Mr Clarke said he was pleased with the way the service went.

“The event went very well,” he said.

“We were pleased with the amount of people who attended and the service went according to plan.”
