The Melbourne Football Club is saddened to hear of the passing of dual premiership player Athol Webb.

Webb played 74 games and kicked 146 goals for the Demons between 1955 and 1959, becoming a member of one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

Recruited from Tasmania, Webb developed into an important forward under legendary coach Norm Smith, forming a strong partnership with Bob Johnson.

Webb played a key role in Melbourne’s 1956 premiership, kicking five goals in the Grand Final victory over Collingwood. He again featured in the 1957 premiership side, kicking three goals in the Grand Final against Essendon, and led the club’s goal kicking in both 1957 and 1958.

Webb was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2006, named a Hero of the Melbourne Football Club in 2008, and made a Life Member in 2023. We will all miss Athol and offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
