It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Edward Miall, now reunited with his beloved wife of sixty years, Treva.

A cherished husband, proud father and grandfather, brother and uncle, John is survived by his children Suzanne, Philip, Caroline, and Michelle; grandchildren Bailey, Violet, Aidan, Elijah, Joel, Avelene, and Fionn; sister Pam and her family.

Born in Quetta, India to Gwynneth and Percy, the family resettled in Perth following partition in 1947. At Christchurch Grammar John excelled in various sports, particularly rowing swimming, and outside of school discovered a lifelong passion for sailing - a pursuit that would define his life.

“Chasing a rainbow,” John pursued his boyhood dream of the Olympics with determination, competing in every Olympic sailing trial from 1960 to 1980, and again in 1992. He won his first Australian Championship at age 20 with mentor Rolly Tasker AM, with whom he sailed from 1961 to 1964 - a proud highlight of John’s career - and was presented with the championship trophy by the Duke of Edinburgh. Despite missing out on Olympic selection John went on to claim multiple state and national titles, crewing with numerous esteemed yachtsmen, and proudly served as Commodore of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron from 2002–2004.

Alongside his sailing achievements, John built a distinguished professional career with General Motors Holden, ultimately becoming a dealer principal, before retiring in 2001.

For all his professional and sporting accomplishments, it was John’s family, and the life he and Treva built together, that was his greatest source of pride.

Larger than life in both stature and spirit, John was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A private family service will be held, as were John’s wishes.
