Maudie Palmer AO, a pioneering figure in Australian art and cultural leadership, is remembered as a visionary whose influence reshaped the nation's modern and contemporary art landscape. Through decades of dedicated service, she championed artists, institutions and ideas that continue to define Australia's cultural identity.

Throughout her career, Maudie Palmer was driven by a deep belief in the power of art to engage communities, provoke thought and reflect the spirit of place. At a time when women were underrepresented in senior cultural leadership roles, she forged a path marked by conviction, generosity and quiet authority.

Her most enduring legacy began in 1981 when she was appointed the inaugural director of Heide Park and Art Gallery, now known as the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Under her leadership, Heide emerged as a vital centre for Australian modernism, honouring the legacy of the Heide Circle while nurturing contemporary practice. During her tenure, the museum expanded its exhibition program and collection, cementing its reputation as a cornerstone of Australian art history.

Maudie Palmer's influence extended further in 2001 when she became the inaugural director of TarraWarra Museum of Art in Victoria's Yarra Valley. Working closely with founders Eva and Marc Besen, she helped shape the museum's vision as a not-for-profit institution with a strong curatorial voice. When TarraWarra opened in 2003, it quickly became a significant destination for modern and contemporary art.

At TarraWarra, Palmer was instrumental in establishing long-term programming and laying the foundations for the TarraWarra Biennial. She also played a key role in expanding the museum's permanent collection, including the acquisition and recognition of First Nations art, reflecting her commitment to cultural inclusion and representation.

Beyond these flagship roles, Maudie Palmer contributed widely across Australia's cultural sector. She served as a trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria, held advisory positions with major arts organisations, and was a respected mentor to curators, directors and artists. Her guidance and advocacy were known for being thoughtful, strategic and deeply supportive.

In recognition of her service to the visual arts, Maudie Palmer was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2006. She later received an honorary doctorate from Monash University, acknowledging a lifetime dedicated to strengthening Australia's cultural institutions and artistic communities.

Those who worked alongside her often spoke of her courage, integrity and generosity of spirit. She was admired not only for what she built, but for how she led, with humility, clarity and an unwavering belief in the importance of art to public life.

Maudie Palmer AO is survived by her two daughters, Greta and Alice. Her legacy lives on through the institutions she shaped, the artists she championed, and the many lives she touched through her leadership and mentorship.
