Brian Wilshire, one of Australia's most respected and enduring radio broadcasters, has passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy defined by connection, creativity and decades of companionship for listeners across the country.

Born in Sydney, Wilshire built a broadcasting career that spanned more than four decades, beginning in regional radio before finding his long-term home at 2GB. He joined the station in 1979 and would go on to become one of its most recognisable and trusted voices.

For many years, Wilshire hosted Australia Overnight, guiding listeners through the quiet hours from midnight into the early morning. His calm, conversational style created a sense of intimacy that resonated deeply with audiences, particularly those seeking comfort, company or reflection while the rest of the city slept.

Beyond his longevity on air, Wilshire was widely admired for his innovation. In the early 1980s, he introduced the Midnight Matchmaker, a segment that brought people together long before dating apps existed. He later created Instant Drama, inviting callers to improvise live scenes on air, a bold and imaginative concept that helped redefine interactive radio.

Colleagues have remembered Wilshire as a generous mentor and a true gentleman of the industry. News of his passing was shared on air by fellow broadcaster Michael McLaren, who described Wilshire as not only a professional inspiration, but a personal guide during his own career.

In a deeply personal reflection, McLaren recalled recently reaching out to Wilshire to share news of his life and family, hoping to reconnect in the months ahead. It would become their final exchange, a moment that underscored the quiet impact Wilshire had on those around him, both on and off the air.

Wilshire worked at 2GB for 36 years, during which time his programs frequently dominated overnight ratings. His ability to hold an audience through the early hours was unmatched, and his voice became a familiar presence in countless homes, workplaces and vehicles across Australia.

Outside the studio, Wilshire was a man of wide interests. He was an author, a musician and a motorsport enthusiast, embracing life with the same curiosity and enthusiasm that defined his broadcasting work. Even after stepping away from regular radio duties, his influence continued to be felt throughout the industry.

Tributes have flowed from colleagues and listeners alike, many describing Wilshire as a reassuring presence during lonely nights, a voice that listened as much as it spoke, and a broadcaster who understood the power of quiet connection.

Brian Wilshire is survived by his family and remembered by generations of Australians whose lives he touched through the airwaves. His legacy endures not only in the programs he created, but in the countless moments of comfort, conversation and companionship he offered to those who tuned in.

In an era of constant noise, Brian Wilshire mastered the art of speaking softly and being heard.
