Popular stand-up comedian and TV personality Cal Wilson has died at the age of 53, her management has confirmed.

In a statement to news.com.au on Wednesday morning, Token Artists announced that the New Zealand-born star had passed away following a short illness, surrounded by family and friends at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

"We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand-up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney," the statement read.

"Cal's generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years. Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.

"Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, Cal moved to Melbourne in 2003 to star in the sketch show, Skithouse. She went on to become one of Australia's best-known comedians with appearances on Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, Would I Lie To You and in her own Netflix stand-up special.

"In lockdown, Cal made elaborate and ridiculous headdresses that she shared with her online community and a painting of Cal wearing a headdress made of doll parts and Christmas baubles featured in the 2023 Archibald Prize, taking out the Packing Room Prize," Token Artists' statement continued.

Wilson was a well-known fixture on the comedy circuit, winning Melbourne Comedy Festival's Best Newcomer Award in 2001 and going on to appear at the event 14 times throughout her career.

She was also a member of its board.

She also co-hosted The Great Australian Bake Off on Foxtel, which her management confirmed was in production when she was first admitted to hospital.

Following the shock news of her death, Foxtel released a statement expressing their sadness.

"We are all completely devastated to lose such an amazing, vibrant person. Cal joined our Bake Off cast last year and instantly brought her unique sparkle to the show," Wendy Moore, Foxtel's Group General Manager for Lifestyle, said.

"Her professionalism, work ethic and genuine heart-warming humour instantly made her a favourite amongst cast and crew, as well as the Australian audience. We will all miss her so much, and our hearts go out to her family and friends."

Wilson is survived by her husband, Chris, and son, Digby.

A statement was also shared on the comedian's official Instagram page.

Tributes have already begun to pour in, with her fellow New Zealand comic, Rhys Darby, sharing his disbelief at the sad news.

"Unbelievable. She was beautiful in every way. An amazing talent, such a quick brain and so much style and taste," the Flight of the Conchhords star wrote.

"This hurts hard. Sending big love to Chris, Digby and family."

One of Wilson's former colleagues, radio personality Jo Stanley wrote: "There is no way of making sense of this brutally sad loss. This glorious shining light, the kindest and most brilliant and funny and clever soul.

"My heart breaks. Thinking with heaviest of heart of her husband and beautiful son. I feel so blessed to have spent time with and worked with you, beautiful Cal."
