The WNBL season is a week and a half away from jumping into action, and two teams have chosen Visy Stadium as the destination for their final tune up.
Reigning premier Bendigo Spirit is facing Melbourne-based Southside Flyers in a pre-season exhibition game on Wednesday night, with tip-off slated for 6:30pm.
Bendigo Spirit general manager Dan Jackson said the side was eager to touch down in another regional location and put on a show for the locals.
“Shepparton is an area which had been highlighted as one that could really do with some engagement with our club,” Jackson said.
“It’s a continuation of our effort to expand our base around regional Victoria.
“Shepparton Basketball have been fantastic to work with so far, and we’re excited to experience what another regional Victorian town has to offer.”
Bendigo was a force to be reckoned with during the 2024-25 campaign, taking home the championship chip with an 18-3 record.
However, with league MVP Sami Whitcomb currently flying the flag in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, the Spirit has shown they are human with two wins, two losses and a draw so far throughout pre-season.
Meanwhile, the Flyers have been in fine fettle, picking up frequent scalps despite finishing bottom of the ladder last season.
Everything points to a bumper bout on Wednesday night.
And the action doesn’t stop there.
In the build up to the match, the Spirit will host two sessions at Visy Stadium on Tuesday night, kicking off with a Macca’s Kids Clinic from 4-5:30pm followed by a High Performance Coaching Clinic from 5:30pm onwards.
The Shepparton visit is part of Bendigo Spirit’s broader regional campaign supported by the Victorian Government, aimed at growing the game, inspiring young athletes and strengthening community connections across the state.
