The David Moran-prepared and driven three-year-old will be striving to get a share of the inaugural $2.1 million in the TAB Eureka to be run at Menangle in NSW.
Captain Hammerhead is one of five Victorians ― half the field ― in the mega money event to be decided over 2400m and confined to three and four-year-old pacers.
Thoroughbred breeder and owner and advertising guru John Singleton bought a slot in the inaugural three-year series and nominated Captain Hammerhead after he had won the $50,000 The Singo, named after Singleton, at Menangle on August 19.
Moran said he was a bit surprised when Singleton nominated Captain Hammerhead, but felt honoured to have a runner in the race in which the winner pockets $1 million.
‘‘I met him after Captain Hammerhead had won the race named in his honour and he told me then he was nominating him,’’ Moran said.
Captain Hammerhead has come up with the number one barrier draw for the big race and, although satisfied, it may also present some problems according to Moran.
‘‘If you get crossed at the start it’s going to depend on where you end up, but hopefully I can settle him into a good forward position in the run,’’ Moran said.
Moran rates the favourite, the brilliant Queenslander Leap To Fame, as the pacer to beat.
The son of boom sire Captain Treacherous, Captain Hammerhead has won six of his 11 starts with two minor placings, which have netted more than $115,000 in prizemoney.
In seven starts as a three-year-old he has won four times and is coming off wins at Bendigo on August 2 and Menangle on August 19, when he won The Singo.
