And it’d be correct.
However, the Magpies aren’t the only high-flying operation in the A-grade landscape.
Shepparton has sidled up alongside the reigning premier after an unbeaten eight-game stretch and driving the Bears’ push to paramount is a new face to the maroon and gold.
Her name is Molly Kennedy, and, boy, this Bear can play.
Kennedy is the recipient of The News’ GVL netball Player of the Month award for May thanks to a resplendent run in the engine room of Shepparton’s middle third.
The athletic multi-positional talent joined from Tatura in the off-season and has been an instant fix for the Bears, who relied on now-departed Paigan Impey and Melbourne Mavericks-contracted star Mackenzie O’Dwyer to fill the position last year.
Shepparton playing coach Kim Borger couldn’t speak highly enough of the new Bear for her output in the past month and beyond.
“Molly is unbelievably versatile in her roles that she plays with Bears,” Borger said.
“She's a tough and relentless circle defender, but can transition into that centre position too.
“She has a fantastic read on the ball and ridiculous closing speed. I am proud to call her my teammate.”
Kennedy’s versatility doesn’t come by accident.
She spent the bulk of the 2024 season splitting centre duties with Emma Quinn and Elsie Boyer while also slotting into goal defence, wing defence and even goal keeper on occasion.
The Bears clinched all four of their bouts in May as Kennedy barely skipped a beat, playing two games in the GD bib and the other two in centre.
Her crowning performance arrived in round seven as she led from the middle against fellow finals contender Seymour, named best-on-court following the 61-41 victory.
Kennedy also ran out the duration of the GVL’s thumping interleague victory over Ovens and Murray League, commanding the centre role to aid the purple and gold brigade to a 68-31 triumph.
