Among them were three Goulburn Valley stars keen to make an impression at the top level of the school athletics pathway.
A blend of state title success and continued excellence on the track and field circuit saw Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s Lucy Potter, Nathalia Secondary College’s Rhys Hansen, and Cobram Anglican Grammar’s Jasper Brown handed a prized opportunity to compete for Team Victoria.
Staking their claim to be the best in their discipline, two left Melbourne with medals around their neck.
One of those was Hansen, who competed in the under-18 men’s pole vault final.
The 17-year-old Nathalia SC student, a former under-15 gold medallist, cleared the bar at 4.15 metres in grisly conditions to add another podium finish to his record, this time of the bronze variety.

On the track, Cobram Anglican Grammar’s Jasper Brown defied slick Melbourne conditions to claim a bronze medal of his own.
Brown had already impressed at the Australian Athletics Cross Country Championships earlier this year, but this time he proved his versatility in the middle distances, with the 13-year-old clocking a personal best 4:20.62 in the rain-drenched 1500m final.
Brown then set a new bar for himself in the 800m, running fifth in a time of 2:05.87.
Meanwhile, after claiming the state title in the 400m, Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s Lucy Potter lined up in an elite field for the national final and produced a personal best run on the big stage.
Potter sliced an impressive 0.13 seconds off her state championship time, clocking a new personal best of 59.87 to finish fifth.
She then backed up her individual success by contributing to Victoria's fourth-place finish in the 4x400m mixed relay.
