Peter’s putting the pedal to the metal at 10th edition of Street Machine Drag Challenge

The real test of mettle comes between races - drivers must navigate their souped-up street machines over 1000 kilometres between tracks, without support crews or trailers, in marathon six-hour stints.

From October 29 to November 2, a convoy of nearly 300 cars across 10 categories will tackle this punishing test of mind and machine, relying solely on their own resources.

Accompanied by young enthusiast and local footy star Liam Rachele, Raditsas will run his Kingswood in the ITF Hire 235 Aspirated class once again.

“I just like the challenge of trying to get through the five days and the 1500-plus kilometres,” Raditsas said.

“The (car) was pretty good last year. I haven't really done much more to it other than putting it on a dyno, and it's probably got a little bit more in it now.

“I'm hoping I can go a bit quicker; I went 10.78 (seconds) last time, and I'm thinking it might run a 10.60.”

Towards the top, competition is fierce, but for Raditsas, the event is one centred around community and pushing your boundaries.

After helping his mate Donny with his Capri, Raditsas, 57, channelled his years of experience into crafting his own monster - a 500-horsepower HG now revving up for its second Drag Challenge.

Whether thundering down the drag strip or cruising the highway, the event's heart beats with a shared passion for four-wheeled marvels.

“Liam's 21 years old and he loves it,” he said.

“He wants to do it one day in his car, and he just crews and helps with both cars; it's good value.

“It's a whole big family of drag racers, that's what makes the event really good.

“(We’ve) made new friends over the last six or seven years now.

“It’s the 10th anniversary this year, so it's going to be a good event.”

The 10th edition of the Street Machine Drag Challenge is run from Wednesday, October 29, to Sunday, November 2, across South Australia and Victoria.
