Section 1
Rutherglen are the first team through to the Section 1 Grand Final after they defeated Wang Hardcourt on Saturday. Rutherglen didn't have it all their own way, as Hardcourt pushed them to the limit and there were a few nervous moments for the Rutherglen captain. Before the mixed sets the 2 teams were locked at 3 sets and 40 games each, and the tension could be seen on the faces. It was time for someone from either team to step up and take the final by the scruff of the neck and stamp their authority. It was Rutherglen captain Jono "too many keys" Keys and Tasanne James that played flawless tennis against their opponents. Hardourt fought to finish but in the end, Rutherglen came away victors. Rutherglen’s best were Scott Francis, Jono Keys and Helen Fuge. Hardcourt’s best were Kerrie Henderson, Matt Lucas and Kylie Doig.
Wahgunyah has bowed out of the flag race at the hands of Corowa, after a successful season in Section 1. Wahgunyah never threatened to cause an upset although they were like an annoying mosquito, they were always thereabouts. Corowa controlled the match from the outset and were determined not to let this match slip. Corowa put the icing on the cake by winning the 3 mixed sets. Corowa had an even team performance, but Claire Davidson shone out with 3 sets. Wahgunyah had none better than Travis "Ronald" McDonald, Kylie Greig and Max Harvey.
Section 2
Wang Hardcourt have one hand on the Premiership Shield after they demolished their nearest rivals Everton Red on Saturday. Everton were always behind the eight ball after the first 2 sets. Everton went close to putting themselves back into the match with a couple close sets but the youthful exuberance of Hardcourt held sway and galloped away with a comfortable victory. Everton will need to regroup if they are to win back the right to challenge Hardcourt in this week’s Preliminary final against Myrrhee. Chris Lestino, Henry Dean and Tomo Moriya were outstanding for Hardcourt while Jo Lucas, Julie Deretic and Mel Hellibrand fought hard for Everton.
Myrrhee have won the right to contest preliminary final after they narrowly defeat Boorhaman on Saturday. The match was neck and neck all day, firstly Boorhaman had the momentum then it swung back to Myrrhee who pushed towards a victory. Boorhaman were far from disgraced and can hold their heads high after their performance on Saturday. Myrrhee were best served by Di Griffin, Daniel Griffin and Cathy Van Berlo. Boorhaman's best was Jack Nolan, Shirley Fuller and Darren Saward.
Section 3
Wahgunyah Wahnation (Kane Palmer, Jack Reid, Ollie Struve, Andrew Palmer) held on to win against a determined Wahgunyahh United (Brad Schmidt, Matt Davis, Brian Jones, Rob Hill). The match was in the balnce with 2 sets remaining and it was the Wahnation team that were steadier in a crisis than United, and this allowed them come out on top when it mattered. Boorhaman (Nick Batchelor, Merryn Byrne, Jack Keys, Darby Parr) have advanced to the Preliminary with a win over Wooragee (Alison "Beetroot" Maher, Mark Knoth, Dean Bensted, Eiylish McRostie). Wooragee were unfortunate to lose a player to illness early which only made their task near impossible to win but to their credit they continued to play the match to completion.
Senior Preliminary finals - Section 1, 2 and 3 at Corowa. Junior Grand Finals next weekend - Wahgunyah vs Corowa Hewitt at Corowa.
