Mooroopna defender Dayna Williams has made her Victorian Netball League championships debut with the Bendigo Strikers in the VNL side’s round two fixture.
Playing against her old side Melbourne University, the club she won an under-23s premiership with last year, Williams stepped foot on court at the top level in new colours.
Williams signed with the Strikers after the VNL transfer window opened in the off-season, and was brought in to play goal defence against Melbourne University.
Featuring across the back third in the second half, Williams helped quell a fast-starting Melbourne University, with the Lightning only increasing its six-goal lead to seven by full-time.
The loss places the Strikers record at 1-1 after a comprehensive round one win against Boroondara where Seymour export and Strikers captain Elle McDonald starred across centre and wing defence.
Mooroopna will hope to have Williams’ services in round one against the Shepparton Swans though, as both 2025 finalists look to get on the front foot early in the 2026 GVL campaign.
Williams’ VNL club debut with Bendigo follows a month of positive promotion for GVL netballers, after Seymour’s Casey Adamson debuted for the Giants in the Super Netball, and Lions Sarah Szczykulski and Ally Black featured for Bendigo’s round one opponent Boroondara.
