But that didn’t stop Lemnos from calling match in round nine of the Shepparton District Tennis Association’s 2025 finale.
Only Lemnos and McEwen Reserve Red’s game went ahead after Shepparton North received a forfeit from Murchison, the Northerners still undefeated at the competition break.
All eyes then turned to McEwen Reserve, where, despite the home team picking up five sets to Lemnos’ four, it still finished behind on the games tally, a three-game buffer all that separated the two sides in the 4-41 to 5-38 Lemnos win.
The visitors claimed the first set at McEwen Reserve Tennis Club thanks to Thomas Jeffrey and Will Kop, but Red’s Brock O’Hara joined Greg Comer and Brett Collins in successful doubles rubbers to nudge ahead.
The combination of Viv Jeffrey and Sonal Shah for Lemnos proved an effective one, winning 6-0, and, despite the next tie going the way of McEwen Reserve, Shah and Julie McClelland enjoyed another strong 6-2 win.
Shah’s 6-1 partnership with Kop then fired Lemnos well clear, despite their opponents taking out two of the final three sets with scorelines of 6-3.
The result keeps Lemnos firmly entrenched in second place, while McEwen Reserve Red was leapfrogged by their Gold-titled clubmates after they received their bye points.
Competition resumes on January 9 with Shepparton North and Lemnos locking horns in a top-of-the-table clash, while the McEwen Reserve derby will also take place.
