Playing against Dookie United, the Kats withstood a gritty neck-and-neck first half before a brick wall defence turned out the power at Katandra Recreation Reserve.
The Power and Kats locked horns across a doggedly-fought first quarter, with both sides scoring four goals, although Katandra edged out Dookie thanks to two behinds.
The contest became a scrap in the second term as scoring dried up, neither side managing to move the ball at will, as contested possessions limited open play and avenues to goal.
As the intensity lifted, Katandra and Dookie United found two goals each respectively, the Kats scoring two behinds to one to marginally increase the lead to three points at half time.
However, after the main break, the Kats found an edge.
Dookie United failed to pierce through Katandra’s structure, while the Kats continued to pick holes inside forward 50 and tick the scoreboard over.
A scoreless third quarter ushered Dookie towards defeat, with the full power outage occurring in the final term causing round one heartbreak for United, falling 7.5 (47) to 11.8 (74).
Jai Utiger, Bailey Bell and Luke Turcato each punted two goals respectively, while Joel Costa was named best on for the Kats for his grunt work.
Brendan McMullan scored two goals for Dookie United, as did Chris Nield, while Rowan Hiscock was named best afield for the Power.
