Travelling to Queensland for the Sunshine Coast Regional Titles, the event is a date circled yearly for Zedda Harrington’s sons, with the teenage pair returning with belts to boast after clear victories in the tropical state.
“It’s one of the ones we always try to attend,” Harrington said.
“It’s more of a bigger tournament.”
A “fleet footed” Izaiah fought two kilograms above his weight class to secure a referee-stopped-contest win in the third round, in what Harrington described as a “perfect” performance.
“He fought up a weight class again, but he’s been great at sort of learning on the job,” Harrington said.
“He was fleet footed with beautiful lateral movement, landing superior punches and catching his opponent - an athlete trained under (former professional boxer) Paul Briggs - off rhythm.
“It was a pretty perfect bout for Izaiah.”
Urijah’s form in the ring continued at Greenbank, fighting Mayhem Boxing’s Jason Tanoa and defeating the New Zealander via unanimous decision.
The 14-year-old won every round, but was made to work as Tanoa wouldn’t fold despite a flurry of punches thrown.
“Urijah was all over him from the start,” Harrington said.
“His opponent was a come-forward, hard slugger.
“There were punches thrown from every angle but Urijah worked his way on top.
“Plenty of respect to his opponent though, he didn’t buckle despite copping a lot of hits.”
Goulburn Valley Boxing Academy product Kobe Pryde also fought at the competition, and while he didn’t compete for a major belt, he won on points and took a medal home.
In two weeks time, Urijah will take the Harrington name into another major tournament, the King of the Ring in Sydney, with a bout scheduled on Thursday, April 9.
