Victoria’s best on the bike begin with a practice run on Friday; the competitors then vie for glory over Saturday and Sunday in the elite, junior and masters categories.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe was elated to see the event touch down in the region once more, noting its economic benefits for some of Shepparton’s newest attractions.
“This weekend we are welcoming more than 450 athletes and their support teams to the region, continuing our city’s proud history of hosting world-class BMX events, having hosted multiple national events and successfully staging the 2020 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“This is a great opportunity for our local businesses to welcome visitors to our region and showcase our wonderful hospitality, restaurants and cafés and our brand new visitor attractions, the Shepparton Art Museum and Museum of Vehicle Evolution.”
With a hefty break between BMX events, AusCycling executive general manager Kipp Kaufmann said they were glad the spectacle was taking place in Greater Shepparton this year.
“After a tough year for so many it’s exciting to be back and hosting a major event in Shepparton. Riders and their supporters are excited to be back together enjoying the sport they love in a location and venue that is world-class,” Kaufmann said.
A state coaching clinic also takes place on Friday, made possible by the Greater Shepparton City Council’s commitment to sporting groups, in developing cutting-edge facilities to entice athletes of the highest calibre.
The BMX State Championships event is open to the public, however anyone aged 12 years or older wishing to attend must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and show proof of vaccination on entry.
Shepparton BMX Track opens to the public from 12.30pm Saturday and 10.15am Sunday. The final races on Sunday, November 28 are also available to watch via live-stream on AusCycling’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAjrvRYNDKCCgYs5U3LG1nQ?app=desktop
