Over the past week, AFL Northern Territory has unveiled batches of players selected for NTFL All Star Saturday on January 24 at TIO Stadium.
In a celebration of the Northern Territory’s best and brightest footballers, two representative sides have been introduced: the Heat and the Spears.
And like all good sides, there is some GV flavour mixed in both pots.
The Spears are comprised of high-impact players from around Australia, bringing the heat to the NTFL over summer.
Rochester gun and 2025 Morrison Medal runner-up Mitch Trewhella (Nightcliff) has been named in the Spears squad, as has former Tatura defender and recent Yarrawonga signing Brad Ryan (Pint).
Meeting them on the oval will be the Heat.
The team is designed as an identity to honour players with long-standing connections to the NTFL, with a Nathalia export set to light it up for the Heat come Saturday.
Reni Hicks, a former VFLW talent, has carved out a career in the Top End over the past six seasons for Pint and has represented the league on three occasions, with her naming in the Heat’s women’s squad as fitting as any.
On the men’s Heat front, former Tongala and Fremantle defender Ryan Nyhuis (Nightcliff) will go up against the likes of Trewhella and Ryan.
While regular NTFL action will hit pause this weekend for All Star Saturday, plenty more Goulburn Valley stars will hope to steer their teams toward finals once it resumes with just three regular season rounds remaining.
Former Shepparton and Tatura bull Matt Shannon finds himself at the ladder’s top with Southern Districts, kicking 12 goals in 11 games while featuring in the best on six occasions.
Congupna duo Jak Trewin and James Boyer are well poised with second-placed Pint alongside Ryan, while returning Lancaster defender Luke Davies is performing consistently for third-ranked St Mary’s.
Trewhella also sits inside the finals bracket with Nightcliff, and has been one of his side’s best in eight out of 12 appearances.
